It’s a Busy Weekend for MVLCT!

Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Theatre is excited to announce that The Laramie Project opens tomorrow night (June 6) in the Uptown Theatre space. Perhaps one of the most important works of LGBTQIA+ theatre, our Pride month production is a close examination of the impact of a hate crime on a community.

It explores themes of community, identity, religion, and politics surrounding the horrific beating death of Matthew Shepherd in Laramie, Wyoming during the autumn of 1998.

The event drew international attention to the quiet town and impacted community members in rippling effects.

Not only are we opening one show, but we’re holding auditions for our next production: Jane Anderson’s Defying Gravity.

ABOUT THE PLAY
Inspired by the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, Defying Gravity weaves together multiple perspectives in the aftermath of a national tragedy. With moments of humor, heart, and even the unexpected presence of Claude Monet, the play examines ambition, loss, and how we make meaning in the face of the unimaginable.

AUDITION INFORMATION

• Character Descriptions: (7 total cast)

  • The Teacher- a passionate educator chosen to go into space. Mother to Elizabeth

  • Elizabeth- the teacher’s daughter who navigates the loss of her mother in the magnitude of a national tragedy

  • Ed & Betty- A retired tourist couple traveling the country in their Winnebago.

  • CB- A NASA engineer struggling with guilt over the role they played in the tragedy.

  • Donna- A barkeep and confidante to the NASA crew.

  • Claude Monet- Yes. That Monet. The impressionist painter. Out of time and space, offering perspective on art, science, ambition, and divinity

• Audition times:

  • Sunday, June 7 at 7:00pm and Monday, June 8 at 7:00pm

  • Callbacks (if needed): June 9 at 7:00pm

• Audition location:

  • The Uptown Theatre in Mount Vernon

• Open to ages 18+

• All genders, races, and backgrounds encouraged to audition for any role

• Be prepared to read sides from the script
